Seven years after a sluice had been constructed on the River, the study was conducted at different sampling sites (upper part, middle part and lower part of the river) and seasons (dry, early rainy and heavy rainy seasons). Twenty-two genera belonging to 20 families and 4 phyla were identifi ed. Chironomus, Cerithidea and Thiara were the three genera most abundant. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index identifi ed that the benthic diversity was generally at the medium level. The Biological Monitoring Working Party for Thailand and average score per taxon scores indicated that the ecological condition in this area can be considered to have fairly clean water with some pollution. Regular monitoring should be conducted especially during the low diversity period, that is in the middle part of the river during dry and heavy rainy seasons and in the upper part of the river during the early rainy season. |

Gallardo สื่อสิ่งพิมพ์:pdf AbstractMost government projects are implemented with little input and participation from the local people. The objective of this study was to assess the fishers’ socio-economic status, their perceptions on the aquatic resources and fisheries management, and their recommendations for improvement of fisheries management in the freshwater fishing area of the Pak Phanang River basin (PPRB), Nakhon Si Thammarat province, southern Thailand. An in-depth semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 161 fishers’ households. The findings of the study showed that most fishers had an annual income from fishing only (80%) that was below the poverty line. Based on the fishers’ perceptions, the aquatic resources were declining due to the deterioration of water quality, increased aquatic weed growth, declining fish stock, and sometimes fish death which all affected their fishing income. The fishers were highly appreciative of the role of the Department of Fisheries and local government units in fisheries management but they had a negative perception of farmers who use chemicals in agriculture because these chemicals were washed into the river, causing fish deaths. They agreed with some activities and measures such as not fishing during the spawning season and in spawning grounds, and not using illegal gear, but they disagreed with some measures such as controlling the quantity of fish caught and ruling on the number of fishers and times for fishing because these would affect their fishing income. The fishers mainly recommended that they should be more involved in fisheries management, particularly in the planning and decision-making steps. |

In-depth interviews with 18 flood victims and from a focus group discussion with eight participants consisting of administrators, members of council, and officers of the Hulong SAO were also undertaken using interview forms as the research tool. It was found that the collaboration between the Hulong SAO and the Hulong community over three periods of time consisted of: 1) pre-impact phase: collaboration in terms of preparation for tools, appliances, food, shelter, domestic animals, and disaster warnings; 2) impact phase: collaboration in terms of community management, coordination, and communication; and 3) post-impact phase: collaboration in terms of damage management, aid, and recovery. The nine factors leading to success in collaboration for flood management in Pak Phanang district consisted of: capable administrators, effective communication, capacity building, knowledge development, public relations, public motivation, cultural activities encouraging safety, flood simulation, and improved accountability. |
